Bad PR For Urban Outfiters Thanks To Controversal Apparel Choices

Urban Outfitters has been under fire in recent years because of some controversial word choices displayed on their apparel. One scandal that caught our attention includes a crop-top shirt with the word “depression” written in differed sized fonts. Customer’s showed their disgust on Twitter and other social media outlets causing the shirt to be reduced from $59 to $9.99.
In an age where looks are important, it seems that size matters to Urban Outfitters who offers a shirt that boldly says, "Eat Less.” People again took notice, including actress Sophia Bush. Sophia has always been a strong supporter of positive body images for women, dating back to her One Tree Hill character Brook Davis’ clothing campaign “Zero is Not A Size.” In an open letter to Urban Outfitter’s that she posted on her blog, Bush writes, “You should issue a public apology, and make a hefty donation to a women’s organization that supports those stricken with eating disorders. I am sickened that anyone, on any board, in your gigantic company would have voted ‘yes’ on such a thing, let alone enough of you to manufacture an item with such a hurtful message. It’s like handing a suicidal person a loaded gun. You should know better.”
Is Urban Outfitter’s trying to make a profit by exploiting mental illness and eating disorders? Or are the shirts just words, not meant to promote anything at all? Either way, Sophia deserves a pat on the back for standing up to Urban Outfitter’s and keeping true to her values.
